Illinois State Senator Donne Trotter is now free on bond after getting caught with an unloaded handgun at O'Hare Airport yesterday. But there are still a lot of questions about Trotter's bid for Jesse Jackson Junior's Congressional seat. IPR's Alex Keefe reports.
The veteran state lawmaker didn't have much to say to reporters after posting bond today.
TROTTER: Not - not today. Not today.
LAWYER: Let's go.
REPORTER: How are you feeling?
REPORTER: Why do you work security?
Indeed, police DID say Trotter told them he had the gun because he works as a part-time security guard. But he apparently forgot to take it out of his carry-on before heading to the airport.
REPORTER: Hey Donne! If it's an accident, why don't you tell the public that?
Trotter didn't answer that one, either. He faces a felony charge of attempting to board an aircraft with a weapon. Trotter has been considered a strong candidate in the Second Congressional District race, but he wasnít talking politics this afternoon.
REPORTER: Are you still running, Senator?
TROTTER: From you.
And with that, Trotter's black sedan pulled away, down California Avenue. The State Senator's next court date is set for Wednesday.
