A central Illinois dentist has come up with a way to prevent a few cavities in Decatur children while providing sweets for American troops serving overseas. Pediatric dentist Bret Jerger organized a Halloween candy buyback program that brought in 345 pounds of candy for a program called Operation Gratitude, which ships care packages to people in the military. Jerger says it was heartwarming to see children being so generous. And he joked that keeping the candy out of kids' hands will make less work for him in the long run. The children could give up to 5 pounds of candy and were paid $1 per pound. The kids also were encouraged to write cards and notes to the troops.
