Wed, 07 Nov 2012 00:57:55 CST

The 17th District Congressional race was the only race in the Peoria area in which an incumbent lost. Republican Congressman Bobby Schilling was defeated by Democrat Cheri Bustos in the newly drawn 17th Congressional district that now includes parts of Peoria and Tazewell Counties. Bustos says shes ready to get started.

I'm going to call every new member of congress whether they be Republican or Democrat, I'll call every single one. We're going to host a retreat and get to know all the new members of congress on a personal level. So when we start working together we will have already a relationship build at least in a small way so we can get this country moving in the right direction."

The newly-drawn 17th Congressional District was thought to favor a democratic candidate. Bustos beat first term incumbent Congressman Bobby Schilling with 53-percent of the vote in the 14-county district. Schilling won the seat two years ago after long-time congressman Lane Evans retired and left the seat to his chief of staff.
