The drive for a third Chicago area airport south of the city is getting some added push from a prominent state lawmaker. Ailing Congressman Jesse Jackson Jr. has long been the face for the proposed Peotone airport. In his absence, it has stalled in recent months. Illinois State Senator Toi Hutchinson wants to get it moving again.
"Itís the oldest political fight in the south suburbs that I can remember. I always say it's a 40 year old fight and I just turned 39."
Hutchinson's 40th district includes many of the south suburbs most affected by the development of an airport near Peotone in Will County. An ongoing tug-of-war has been who will control the airport, Will County or outside interests in Cook County. Hutchinson says thereís room to compromise.
"It's going to affect Will County, Kankakee County and the southern part of Cook County. Usually, in a good compromise, nobody gets everything they want."
The senator says the primary objective of the airport is job creation for an area that sorely needs it.
