A zoo accrediting organization is giving a one-year extension to the Miller Park Zoo as it works on financial issues and finding a companion for its lone sea lion. The Association of Zoos and Aquariums has put off approving a five-year accreditation for the Bloomington Zoo. The organization says the zoo lacks financing to make needed improvements, the sea lion needs a companion and the Miller Park zoo needs to come up with education and conservation plans. Superintendent Jay Tetzloff says the zoo is making progress on the issues, including working with a breeding program to land another sea lion.
