A side effect of this year's drought could extend to the water table and to farm fields next year. Dan Schaeffer, the Director of Nutrient Stewardship for the Illinois Council on Best Management Practices says corn and soybeans need water to use fertilizer and for the fertilizer to be available to the plants in soluble form....

Schaeffer says the Council is funding a huge study of soil samples through the University of Illinois about how much nitrogen remains in the ground. He says that will offer guidance on how much fertilizer to lay down both next spring and after future drought years.
