A soldier from central Illinois has been awarded a bronze star medal for road building and engineering projects in Afghanistan. Captain Aaron Fisher of Bloomington commands a Marine engineering support company. Military officials say Fisher's company built more than 60 kilometers of new road in Helmand province, under sometimes challenging and hostile conditions. Among the projects is the Route Red Wadi Crossing land bridge to ensure a main supply route remains open after the winter thaw. Fisher says that effort also helps local commerce and improves the quality of life for Afghan citizens. Fisher says he owes the award to the Marines in his company. Fisher is a graduate of Bloomington High School and Illinois State University. He's married to his high school sweetheart Erin and they have five sons.
