The brain trust behind Uptown Normal's renovation says the Town is progressive on sustainability issues compared to cities like Austin, Texas, New York City and Bolder, Colorado. President and C-E-O of Farr Associates, Doug Farr, says leadership dedication led to the renovation of Uptown and elements of sustainability.

Farr says Normal was the first municipality in the country to require LEED certified standard buildings within private development. The Chicago Architect says Uptown has many parts that fall under LEED standards, including where development takes place. That requirement, he says offered an incentive to restore old buildings. Farr says the fountain at Traders Circle is another sustainable feature, which collects rain water and purifies it before use.
