Students are being released one by one as their parents sign them out. They fill the auditorium at Eastview Christian Church. The Assistant Principal is calling out names of students to be dismissed and the named are being displayed on a video screen at the front of the auditorium. Students are also eating sandwiches donated by area businesses as the release process continues its slow going. Teacher Susan Harrington taught at NCHS for many years before retirement and was subbing today. Harrington says shortly before second hour (8a) she heard screams and running in the halls. She did not initially attach importance to that noise because it was a Friday in the high school. But, school officials then announced a code red. Harrington says she made sure her students were in the room and locked the door and waited. She says the students were wonderful in offering assurances to the more nervous of their friends that all would be ok. When the code red was lifted she says she led her class across the field to the church.
