Sales tax receipts for Bloomington support the image of a recovering economy. City Manager David Hales says first quarter retail sales growth was 8% and year to date it's 12%
Lumber, hardware and building materials, furniture, and drugs and miscellaneous retail categories saw the highest growth in Bloomington early in the year. The only negative category was manufacturing. Hales says among large Illinois Cities, Bloomington's first quarter retail growth ranked third. The town of Normal ranked seventh of eight with an increase of more than 4%.
