WGLT has learned that former Bloomington Alderman John Hanson will join the race for Mayor later today. Sources tell WGLT that Hanson will reportedly make his announcement on another media outlet later today. In 2010 Hanson declined to run for a second full term after being appointed to fill a vacancy when Mike Sprague resigned from the Ward 8 seat. he served about five years as Alderman. Hanson is the owner of a dry cleaning business in Bloomington. He would make the fourth announced candidate for Mayor. Two term Mayor Steve Stockton said earlier he would not run for a third term. Currently announced are Political Scientist and former McLean County Board Member Tari Renner. Renner narrowly lost to Stockton three years ago. Mitsubishi worker and failed Libertarian Gubernatorial candidate Lex Green announced a run last month. The fourth candidate is State Farm Insurance employee, Alton Franklin who has been a critic of the city council. Renner and Green have both announced a need for improved infrastructure in the city. Renner also emphasizes openness in government among other themes. When Hanson stepped down from City service in 2011, he said he would explore his next option. The filing period for the municipal contests will be in November with elections in April.
