The U-S Postal Service sorting and processing facility in Bloomington has started its phase out. After the initial move earlier this month, outgoing mail from Bloomington Normal is now being sorted in Champaign. Sorting of incoming parcels will remain at the Empire Street location until February of 2014. Postal Service spokeswoman Beverly Howard says 41 workers have been reassigned to Champaign and Peoria. Another six have retired. Howard says 83 postal service employees remain at the Bloomington facility for now. The postal service is trying to downsize based on changing mailing patterns by the public and because of Congressional requirements that the agency pay pension and benefit costs up front.
