The Town of Normal is hopeful approval will come soon on a $500,000 park improvement grant. City Manager Mark Peterson says one of the highest staff priorities would be connecting separate pieces of the constitution trail.

"North of College Avenue kind of in the Eagles Landing area where the trail extends out to Shepherd Road but doesn't go any further. The other gap would be along Raab Road where there is a section of trail near Prairieland School and there is a significant gap until we get to the main branch."

And such awards, Peterson says, are rare these days.

"Oh extremely scarce. This would not be available if not for the capital bill and our legislative delegation put forth a number of projects on behalf of Bloomington and Normal."

The Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity has not yet finalized the grant. Peterson says other possibilities for the money could include unfunded pieces of the park master plan; playground equipment replacement, improvements to Shepherd Park, and park shelters around town. The Town Council would decide where to place the money.
