Underground transformer fire disrupts Uptown Normal noonhour
The already chaotic and crowded streets around Uptown Normal got a bit more crowded and chaotic as explosions beneath Fell Avenue, in front of the Marriott Hotel, sent patrons, including moved-in ISU students and their parents, out of stores onto the sidewalks. Assistant Fire Chief Doug Barnett says the problem appears to be with transformers under the street.

Barnett says no one was hurt, but power along the 100 block of North Street was knocked out around 11:20, leaving some shops and restaurants without power when potential business had peaked. Barnett says fire alarms started going off moments later. Fire officials closed Broadway between North and Beaufort Streets to pedestrians and vehicles for about an hour. A cause and damage estimate haven't been determined.
