McLean County officials are declaring last Thursday's storm which caused extensive damage in parts of west Bloomington and just outside the city limits as a "local" disaster area. The damage was not heavy enough to qualify for federal or state aid, so McLean County Board Chairman Matt Sorenson declared the area a local disaster. The designation allows for additional sharing of government resources to allow for the removal of debris in Bloomington, Dale, Dry Grove and Danvers Townships. Emergency management officials in McLean County estimate damage at about $1 million to homes and private property and about $2.5 million to commercial properties. The storm that blew through late Thursday did tornado-like damage, but weather officials say no tornadoes were present.
