Illinois State University is kicking off a new program to enhance civic engagement called ISU Leads. Student Affairs Vice President Larry Dietz says this is an offshoot of the American Democracy Project which tries to build better citizens as young people graduate.
ISU Leads is a campus-wide effort to require students to complete civic engagement, global leadership, and general leadership opportunities. Dietz says the Global track is something ISU is trying to grow in, to help students develop social consciences and a sense of what it means to be a global citizen. ISU has also been recognized as one of only two dozen U-S colleges named civic learning leadership institutions, by a student affairs professional organization.
