Illinois Senate President John Cullerton says it's time for former Governor George Ryan to get out of prison. Ryan is scheduled to be released from prison in January as part of a work release program. The Republican was sentenced to six and a half years behind bars for taking bribes. Cullerton, a Democrat, says it's appropriate Ryan to be able to go back to work:
"I never felt he was a threat to society if he was walking on the streets. I think he, obviously, served a lot of time for his offense."
Meantime Ryan's attorney says he still wants to appeal part of the conviction. He says prosecutors never fully proved Ryan took bribes.
