Voters in central Illinois will likely have three names on the ballot for congress in the 13th congressional district. A challenge to independent candidate John Hartman is being withdrawn. The challenge was filed by a lawyer representing the Republican Party. Hartman says the challenge appears to have been based on incredulity:
"It seems like they uh, just had a hard time believing that just one person could go out and get over 5,000 signatures."
Hartman says he collected nearly 5,800 signatures over four months. He says no evidence was presented to the state election board to back up the allegations. The challenge was subsequently withdrawn. Hartman, of Edwardsville, says collecting the signatures was a daunting distracting endeavor:
"The process has drawn me away from policy considerations and development for about four months now, and I'm really relieved to be back dealing with the issues, because that's what movitated me to get into this in the first place."
Republican Rodney Davis of Taylorville and Democrat David Gill of Bloomington are also running for the seat.
