Governor Pat Quinn has signed two bills designed to stop people from misusing parking placards for the disabled. The Governor says the laws will help people with legitimate disabilities find parking places and fight fraud.
"For anyone to try and take those access points, access areas and zones, that is not really qualfied to do so, does not have a disability, is really just plain wrong."
One measure increases the initial fine for misusing a disability license plate or parking decal from $500 to $600. it also imposes a thousand dollars fine on any healthcare provider who knowingly falsifies the certification that allows someone to get such a plate or decal. The second measure imposes A 25-hundred dollar fine goes on anyone who uses a dead persons's placard.
