A union official says green jobs have been very important to staving off economic disaster in the construction trades in McLean County. Mike Matejka of Laborers International says wind farm jobs and high speed rail improvements have kept people working.
Matejka says the local unemployment rate in recent years has been in the seven to eight percent range. But, the the slowdown in housing construction and road repair, among the construction trades jobless rate are about 20%. Matejka also says green jobs that help America generate its own electricity inspire a lot of pride in construction workers.
