The head of the Ecology Action Center says he hopes a battery recycling grant from the County will result in another ten tons of batteries being diverted from landfills. Michael Brown says that's how much the program brought in last year.
"While we're plauteauing in this past year, its been a good probably fifty percent growth each year."
McLean County government has approved a 16,000 dollar grant to renew the battery recycling effort.
"Batteries have been known to contain certain hazardous type materials and while those quantities are being reduced all the time through improving technology, we do want to keep those hazardous heavy metals and such out of the landfill."
The program is in its eleventh year.
