An attorney for a political insider-turned-government witness in the investigation of former Gov. Rod Blagojevich's administration says the 5 1/2-year prison term imposed on his client is fair. Stuart Levine's lawyer spoke to reporters after a federal judge in Chicago sentenced the admitted swindler and longtime drug addict to the sentence prosecutors had recommended. Jeffrey Steinback says he hadn't been holding out hope of an even more lenient sentence. Levine had pleaded guilty to money laundering and fraud and could have been imprisoned for life. The 66-year-old apologized before the judges announced the sentence and his voice cracked as he also apologized to his children.
Prosecutors called Levine one of the most important government witnesses in the state's recent history. They declined to comment after the hearing.
