The first day of school for Normal-based Unit 5 is August 22nd, just over a month from today, and no one knows for sure who will drive students to class. Judge Scott Drazewski sent the issue to the Illinois Education Labor Relations Board for a hearing August 17th in Springfield.
Unit Five fired it's unionized drivers, and outsourced the job to an Ohio based bus company, First Student. The move came as the newly organized drivers were negotiating for their first contract as members of AFSCME. The labor organization asked for an injunction to prevent the moves.
Superintendent Gary Niehaus says the school will continue to work with First Student in planning for the coming school year. The school board filed an appeal immediately after the ruling.
