A magazine study is ranking the Peoria area as a leading location for recession recovery. "Area Development's" annual leading locations list for 2012 places the Peoria area at number 20 on a list of Midwestern Metropolitan areas, regardless of size. The study places Peoria 78th among all 365 U.S. cities studied. The Heartland Partnership's Kip McCoy attributes Peoria's success to a resurgence of manufacturing and an increase in exports.
"Those things kind of working together as other parts of the world are doing well even though we're seeing some recovery here in the states, not quite the growth as in some areas and we're able to capitalize on that."
McCoy says the area's technology sector has improved manufacturing because the industry is now more tech savvy. Although Peoria ranks high on this study, McCoy says the region's unemployment numbers reflect greater efficiencies, though less hiring.
