Residents of the 13th congressional district to get a third choice A southwestern Illinois man says he's running as an independent for the congressional seat now held by outgoing US Representative Tim Johnson. John Hartman of Edwardsville filed petitions Monday as a candidate for the US House from the new 13th Congressional District. Hartman is the chief financial officer at a Saint Louis firm called DNA Polymerase Technology. His campaign website says he has a business administration degree from St. Louis' Washington University and a Johns Hopkins University master's in teaching. Hartman says he supports the Simpson-Bowles Commission's recommendation to trim spending and raise revenue to deal with the national deficit. He also says while the Affordable Care Act doesn't do enough to rein in costs, he does NOT favor its repeal.
The new 13th District stretches across parts of central and southwestern Illinois and includes parts of Bloomington and Normal. Other candidates include Democrat and Bloomington physician David Gill and Rodney Davis, a Taylorville man who has been a longtime aide to Republican congressman John Shimkus of Collinsville.
