A bat found inside a home in Normal is the first reported rabid bad found in McLean County this year. Last year the Health Department says the County had three bats test positive for rabies. The record is ten set in 2010. Director Walt Howe says this is nearly the most active time of year for bats and it's important people vaccinate their pets to avoid exposure. Bat bites are often undetectable because their teeth are small and sharp. Unless they are ill, the small flying mammals also rarely come in contact with people. Last year 49 rabid bats were found in Illinois. So far this year the number is 19.
