Bloomington city leaders are calling the just concluded season of U-S Cellular Coliseum a successful year even though the venue did not quite break even. The operating loss for the coliseum in the last budget year was about $26,000. Central Illinois Arena Management Vice President Bart Rogers says they had been on track for a profit until the day-of cancellation of a large concert in April, softer club and concession sales in the fourth quarter and unanticipated building repairs. An unexpected 3% increase in Illinois unemployment taxes also affected the bottom line. On the bright side, for the fourth year in a row the Coliseum attracted more than 300,000 people, and 100,000 in the fourth quarter alone. City officials say they money they spent had a nearly 17million dollar impact on the local economy. A comparison of Midwest venues ranked the coliseum third among similar facilities in the last calendar year. Of the top ten venues, the coliseum has the lowest seating capacity. Events at the coliseum brought in nearly $3 million during the last budget year. Central Illinois Arena Management notes customer satisfaction remains high.
