State Senator Dave Koehler of Peoria says he believes the public will support higher drivers' license fees that would boost revenue for historic sites and state parks. Under discussion is a two dollar a year increase that would go to the Department of Natural Resources. Koehler says he had a telephone town hall meeting in which people acknowledged park budgets have fallen below what's needed to maintain recreational oportunities.
The Department budget has been reduced by more than half in the last ten years. The proposal also calls for entry fees for out of state visitors to state parks and historic sites.
