Household hazardous waste collections have been scheduled in six Illinois communities including Peoria for spring and fall. The events give citizens the opportunity to safely dispose of unused and leftover household products such as paint thinners, motor oils and insecticides. The materials are handled in an environmentally correct manner, redirecting them from local area landfills. This year's collections are scheduled from 8 O'clock in the morning until 3 O'clock in the afternoon on Saturdays. The first will be in Carbondale on June 2. Other collections area set for Peoria on September 8, and Champaign-Urbana on September 29. Among the items accepted are batteries, fluorescent lamps and unwanted pharmaceuticals.
