McLean County is now taking a neutral stance on a bill in Springfield that would kill chances of adding hazardous waste to the Clinton landfill in DeWitt County. McLean County Administrator Bill Wasson says an earlier version was too broad and would have restricted all landfill sitings. But, an amendment more closely targets the situation in Clinton.

Opponents of the Clinton landfill expansion warn any leaks could contaminate the Mahomet Aquifer, a water source for Champaign, the Town of Normal and dozens of other communities in the region. Area Disposal, a subsidiary of Peoria Disposal argues PCBs would not escape the site and leach into ground water. A legal fight over the issue is also ongoing.
