Immigration issues topped protests in a number of communities across the country marking May Day, including in Bloomington-Normal. Jenn Carillo of Occupy Blo-No and Latinos United for Change says a courthouse area demonstration called for McLean County Sheriff Mike Emery to stop calling immigration officials when identities of those taken into custody are in doubt.

Emery has said he is in no position to turn down the request of a federal agency and consults the agency on all non established identities, not just for latinos. Carillo says that has a chilling effect on the latino community, making them more invisible than ever before.

Carillo says the group hopes to convince Emery to support an alternative way to establish identity, such as allowing undocumented immigrants to get drivers licenses. Emery says he'd review any proposed bill, but none yet exists. Carillo says Emery refuses to meet again with LUC. Emery says he has already met twice with the group to explain his policy.
