Dozens of Toastmasters convene in Bloomington-Normal this weekend as part of the organization's efforts to improve communication and leadership skills. Bonnie Tippey, District 54 Governor, says the international not-for-profit group's mission is more relevant as the world shrinks.
Tippey says the conference's theme is based on John C. Maxwell's "21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership." The Toastmaster's conference runs Friday and Saturday at The Chateau in Bloomington. She say says technology puts importance of communication on a new level.
Toastmasters International began in 1924. Founder Ralph Smedley spent some time living in the twin cities before moving on. Speakers will give 5-7 minute presentations and will be evaluated with positive feedback. Some will advance to the national competition this summer.
