El Paso-Gridley High School is among the most endangered historic places in Illinois. A list released today by the non-profit group Landmarks Illinois also includes the former Pekin Community High School "West Campus" which has been closed for 13 years. The school buildings are included in the category of "neighborhood schools." Also on the list are a poorly maintained Freeport city hall, a modernist lakefront home in Lake County, an 1854 limestone house in Alton and a Cook County building that housed widows of Civil War soldiers. Landmarks Illinois releases its list every year to help draw attention to buildings and other historic sites that are in danger of being demolished. Many are endangered because the recession and state budget problems leave little money for maintenance. Others may be targeted by developers.
