Former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev praised President Barack Obama during a visit to Chicago today. Gorbachev says he understands the president has his detractors, but he still supports Mister Obama. But Gorbachev said through a translator today Mister Obama's election in 2008 brought a "new spirit" to the U-S.
"However there are still vested interests that want another Cold War, another arms race, weapons trade, interventions. (Russian in background.) They will not succeed."
Gorbachev says the way forward for the U-S should be through international partnerships, not through a global American empire. The former Soviet president is in Chicago for a three-day summit of Nobel Peace Laureates, including the Dalai Lama and President Jimmy Carter.
