The U-S Department of Transportation has opened bidding on passenger cars for high speed rail routes in Illinois, and up to five other states. The Transportation Department says the Buy America provision of the $551 million request for proposals requires that all components of the new bi-level cars be made by American workers with American materials. That's supposed to boost domestic job growth. Selection of the manufacturer will happen this fall. The approximately 130 rail cars will be delivered starting in 2015. Purchases of new engines for the Chicago to Saint Louis corridor are planned further out. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood of Peoria says the bidding represents a win-win scenario for both workers and the traveling public.
