The two candidates for the democratic nomination to the new 13th congressional district are clashing over the importance of issues. Greene County States Attorney Matt Goetten says Bloomington physician David Gill is not emphasizing the most important issue in the compaign--the economy and job creation. During a conference call with reporters, Goetten supporter and Springfield alderman Doris Turner said Gill should stop talking about campaign funding and focus on real issues.

David Gill says issues such as campaign funding, women's rights, gay marriage and term limits are important. He says Goetten's credibility is at stake when it comes to making campaign promises.

The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee supports Goetten's campaign. The winner of next week's democratic primary could face incumbent Republican Tim Johnson in November. Johnson has two challengers on the Republican side. Turner points out Gill has lost to Johnson three times previously and says Gill is not the strongest candidate to defeat Johnson.
