The staff at the Children's Discovery Museum is adjusting to life under a new manager after founding manager Shari Buckelew was fired from her post late last week. Interim manager Carol Struck will lead the museum while a search for a permanent director begins. Struck has a deep resume as an interim leader with other organizations but does not have experience with the museum. Jim Jawahar, chair of ISU's Department of Management and Quantitative Methods, says most organizations pick an interim chief from within.
Struck has led the District 87, Unit 5 and Olympia school districts on an interim basis and also chaired ISU's Sesquicentennial committee five years ago. City Manager Mark Peterson offered no explanation about Buckelew's dismissal last week other than there was no malfeasance on her part. Buckelew formed what became the Children's Discovery Museum two decades ago in a shopping center in Normal, and oversaw its growth and transformation into a multi-million dollar building in Uptown Normal, as well as the transition into the Normal Parks and Recreation Department.
