6 PM, Hanukkah Lights
A perennial NPR favorite for nearly two decades, acclaimed authors explore Hanukkah stories written expressly for Hanukkah Lights. This year's show features brand new stories by Danit Brown, Michael Blumenthal and Rachel Shukert.

8 PM, Acousticity
Our annual retrospective of folk musicians who passed on in the past year, this time including Liam Clancy, Mike Seeger, Bill Harrell and Mary Travers.

Sunday December 20

8 PM, Acousticity
Host Bruce Bergethon shares his favorite holiday acoustic music new and old from Eileen Ivers, Joel Mabus and Timothy P.

9 PM, A Carolina Christmas from Biltmore Estate with Kathy Mattea
Listen for a festive celebration of the Appalachian folk traditions and other styles native to the Carolinas. Two-time female vocalist of the year Kathy Mattea sings fresh arrangements from her acclaimed holiday albums, Good News as well as Joy for Christmas Day. Joining Kathy Mattea will be the Carolinas’ premiere choral ensemble, VOX, as well as Baroque/Celtic trio The Beggar Boys. You’ll hear African-American spirituals, folk favorites and Celtic jigs.

7 PM, Piano Jazz Christmas Special
Piano Jazz swings in the holiday season with a special program of Christmas music! McPartland and her guests from seasons past share their favorite memories and perform Christmas classics and original holiday tunes. Guest artists include George Shearing, Tony DeSare and Dena DeRose.
8 PM, SwingTime
Ella Fitzgerald’s renditions of holiday classics remain some of the most enduring.  GLT’s Laura Kennedy brings you some of her favorite Ella Fitzgerald seasonal swingers, along with Benny Goodman and Duke Ellington.

7 PM, Radio Deluxe
Hosts John Pizzarelli and wife Jessica Molaskey say if you bring the egg nog, the chair and the cheer, they'll bring the music. Listen for classics from Vince Guaraldi and Louis Armstrong. The also have a great gift idea: a recently reissued live Ella Fitzgerald performance.

 

Wednesday, December 23

7 PM, Center Stage
While you await that visit from that elf, let host Sandi James tickle your fancy with classic holiday showtunes. She guarantees to entertain everyone gathered round the radio, from tiny tots to grandma and gramps with music from from Holiday Inn (White Christmas) and Meet Me in St. Louis (Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas), Easter Parade (Drum Crazy), Fiddler on the Roof and Jesus Christ Superstar.

Take care of those last minute details while listening to GLT Jazz holiday classics.

Enjoy finger snapping favorites from Harry Connick, Jr, Count Basie, Diana Krall and Peggy Lee as they and host Don Munson make merry for your Christmas Eve.

Play with your new toys, cook up that holiday feast and enjoy a day full of the best holiday jazz going.

Stay tuned for two specials from NPR. Then party from 7 PM into the wee hours of Boxing Day with Delta Frank and GLT Blues.

12 PM (noon), Jazz Piano Christmas
Hear solo performances and duos playing original interpretations of favorite holiday classics. Dr. Billy Taylor, Ramsey Lewis, Patricia Barber, Eldar and more play for you.

6 PM, Tinsel Tales: NPR Christmas Favorites These stories from the NPR archives touch on the meaning of Christmas. You’ll hear from David Sedaris, Bailey White, John Henry Faulk and other NPR voices, past and present, telling stories of the season.

8 PM, Acousticity
Host Bruce Bergethon spins the best acoustic recordings of 2009, including debuts from Sara Watkins and Sarah Jarosz, and recent projects from Steve Earle and The Steep Canyon Rangers.

6 PM, The Capitol Steps Politics Takes a Holday! New Years Edition 2010
Let the Steps take the sting out 2009 with their hilarious year end review. No one is safe: Barack Obama, Sarah Palin, Joe Biden, Govenor Mark Stanford, Harry Reid, the Salahis, Rahm Emanuel, Hillary and Bill... the Capitol Steps roast their chestnuts and more. Plus they'll share some gems from the newest Capitol Steps CD, Barackin' Around the Christmas Tree.

Sunday, January 3

6 PM, American Routes 10th Anniversary Celebration
Ring in the New Year live from the House of Blues in New Orleans to celebrate ten years of American Routes. Host Nick Spitzer is joined on stage by Dr. Michael White and his Liberty Jazz Band, the young Cajun band Feufollet, and New Orleans jump blues legend Deacon John, along with several special guests.
