Here's what the GLT staff is saying about some new blues releases.  Click on the album cover to hear a sample of the CD.

Sample "Roamin' & Ramblin"David "Honeyboy" Edwards Roamn' & Ramblin' (Earwig)  This CD contains early and late releases of Honeyboy. Accompanied by his manager Michael Frank on harp, Edwards knows the blues, and sings it. Back in the 30's & 40's, he ran with Robert Johnson and Sonny Boy Williamson. There is no doubt that Honeyboy’s licks and voice have stiffened over the years, but he still delivers.  Even when things get a little shaky, his spirit remains stong. - Frank Black

Sample "West Side Strut"Eddy "The Chief" Clearwater West Side Strut (Alligator)
On "West Side Strut" you'll hear Clearwaters "trademark" Chuck Berry Rock & Roll, but producer Ronnie Baker Brooks pushes Clearwater into an overall harder-edged rock sound than one is used to hearing from "The Chief."  You'll also hear elements of country, gospel and soul on this fantastic release, his first for the legendary Alligator label.  - Jon Norton

Sample "Blood Brothers"Smokin' Joe Kubek & Bnois King Blood Brothers (Alligator)
Their debut on Alligtor Records is their best studio recording since their debut release in 1991.  Kubek again delivers amazing fretwork and King compliments with his tasty guitar and his usual smooth vocals. A nice mix of rockin’ blues, ballads and boogies. - Jon Norton

Sample "Houston Is The Place To Be"The Calvin Owen Show Houston is the Place to Be (Sawdust Alley)
B.B. Kings longtime trumpet player with another killer big band blues release! - Jon Norton

Sample "Hombres Perfecto"Motor City Sheiks Hombres Perfecto (Top Flite)
Mark Robinson and Emmanual Garza have been an intregal part of the Detroit blues scene for nearly 3 decades.  Since the 1990's, they've been tearing up Michigan and Ohio with their brand of gritty blues, Chicago style shuffles and even a honky tonk or two.  It's been 8 years since we last heard a Sheiks recording, but as you'll hear when you click on the above CD cover, they've still "got game", and plenty of attitude. - Jon Norton

Sample "Mess Of Blues"Jeff Healey Mess Of Blues (Ruf)
Not afraid to refer to himself and his band as a great bar band, Jeff Healey is much more than that.  One of the finest rock and blues guitarists of his generation, Healey and his band romp through blues songs made popular by Muddy Waters and Freddy King, as well as straight up rock covers of Neil Young and The Band.  Listening to "Mess of Blues" is a joy for the sheer fun the band is having. But it's also sad knowing that this was his last recording before passing away this past March. .- Jon Norton

Sample "Backbone & Gristle"Mac Arnold Backbone & Gristle   (Pfob)
Raised in South Carolina, Arnold has had many careers. He was the backbone of the Muddy Waters Band in the 60’s, then went to Hollywood to produce “Soul Train”.  Coming back to South Carolina in the 80’s to farm, drive truck, and dig waterwells. Mac Arnold reveals himself in songs. “Gas Can Story” tells of his brother who made a guitar from a Gas Can. Getting back into music with "Plate Full 'O Blues is our gain …Arnold fronts a terrific band and he is a winner. – Frank Black

Sample "Nothing To Lose"Alex Tintinalli Nothing To Lose  (Scarlet Dragon)
Just 12 years old, Canadian Alex Tintinelli is deep into the blues.  Here he showcases that he can not only play a lick or two, but that he can also sing. – Jon Norton

Sample "Lowdown Feelin"Mannish Boys Lowdown Feelin' (Delta Groove)
Based in California, this group has quickly become one of the most popular groups in the country.  Finis Tasby, Johnny Dyer, and Bobby Jones are referred to as the “supergroup” of blues.  4 year old band has a traditional blues feelin with a modern style. I can’t see why anyone wouldn’t want to own all 4 of their CD’s. - Frank Black
