BPD Chief designate Clay Wheeler is pictured with retiring Chief Brendan Heffner.

The new Bloomington police chief will be the current assistant chief.

City Manager Steve Rasmussen said Assistant Chief Clay Wheeler will be appointed Monday. Current Chief Brendan Heffner retires Friday to become a U.S. Marshal for the Central District of Illinois.

Wheeler was also a finalist in the previous search.

“He has served the community with dedication and integrity for over two decades, and I expect he will excel in the role of chief. Our city is fortunate to have him here, ready to hit the ground running,” said Rasmussen.

Wheeler has been with the Bloomington Police Department since 1991, starting as a third-shift patrolman and moving to field-training officer and hostage negotiator, detective in the criminal investigation division for 13 years, sergeant, lieutenant, and assistant chief in 2011.
