Westminster Village Starts $33 Million Expansion And Renovation

More senior citizens are ready to move into retirement communities than there is space for them to live in Bloomington-Normal.

That's according to Westminster Village CEO Barb Nathan, who said the driving force behind a $33 million expansion and renovation is the 300 people on their waiting list.

"That's a combination of people who want to move to Westminster within a couple of years and others that see a little bit further down the road, but feel that it's their plan to live here," said Nathan.

Nathan said Westminster is also planning for the future.

"The first baby boomers will probably enter a world like Westminster in another 10 years. That's part of the reason," said Nathan.

The seven-year phased project starts with a new entrance off Mercer Avenue, 18-bed nursing home expansion and conversion to mainly private beds at the Martin Health Center, and expanded common areas in the main retirement community. Assisted living areas will also receive attention.

Nathan said the not for profit organization will finance the construction and renovation.
