Bloomington Police | Missy Pendley
Nicole Elbert and Monroe Elbert.

A 50-year-old Bloomington man has been arrested in connection with the fatal stabbing of his wife at their home Monday afternoon.

Bloomington Police responded to 610 N. McLean St., just east of downtown, around 2:30 p.m. Monday after someone called 911 claiming to have killed his wife. Nicole M. Elbert, 30, was found unresponsive at the scene. She died from multiple stab wounds, McLean County Coroner Kathleen Davis said Tuesday. Toxicology tests are pending, Davis said.

Monroe Elbert was booked at the McLean County jail just before 7 p.m. on preliminary charges of murder and aggravated battery of a child, records show. He has not yet been formally charged by the McLean County state's attorney's office.

"The investigation is ongoing and no further details are available at this time," authorities said in a statement. "No other suspect(s) are being sought in connection with this case, and there is no reason at this time to believe there are any threats to public safety."

Those with information about the case are asked to contact police at (309) 434-2371. Those looking to remain anonymous can call McLean County Crime Stoppers at (309) 828-1111.
