By a roughly 7 to 1 margin, United Auto Worker members have ratified a new contract agreement with Mitsubishi Motors North America. The final vote talley was 697 "Yes" to 103 "No."
Details of the agreement were explained to union members at a meeting Monday. The contract expired in August. As negotiations on a new contract were about to start, the company announced plans to cease production at the plant at the end of November, lay off staff and close the facility in May. About 1,200 people work at the plant
Union President Rod DeVary says a new contract is necessary even with the looming closure because employees still have certain rights.
