In spite of all the controversial statements made by GOP Presidential Candidate Donald Trump, central Illinois Congressman Rodney Davis is sticking by his party's nominee.
Davis (R-Taylorville) talked with reporters last week saying he believes Democrat Hilary Clinton is not trustworthy.
Davis says this is not just blind loyalty to the GOP.
"No you don't have to just hold steady with your party, but the fact of the matter is I can't vote for Hillary Clinton. I'm gonna vote for the Trump-Pence ticket, yeah," said Davis.
Davis was responding to a request for reaction to the news that more than 70 Republicans have signed a letter to RNC Chair Reince Priebus asking him to stop spending money on Trump and put party dollars toward House and Senate races.
GLT asked Davis during a recent stop in Normal how he responds to constituents who may believe that supporting a candidate who makes racist, misogynist, and false statements is accepting those things himself.
"(Laughs) You know, the question you just asked is a pretty pointed and loaded question. Unfortunately, I can only respond by saying I don't agree with any politician in any party 100 percent of the time on any issue," said Davis.
Davis has also just agreed to become a part of Donald Trump's Agriculture Advisory Committee.
Davis' 13th district contains a part of Bloomington-Normal.
His Democratic Party opponent in the November election is Mark Wicklund of Decatur. Independent candidate David Gill has filed a lawsuit seeking ballot access.
