Two Killed In Gunfire At Normal Apartment Complex

Apr 25, 2018

Police are investigating a shooting that left two people dead Wednesday night inside a Normal apartment complex.

The gunfire happened just before 10 p.m. inside the apartment at 1444 E. College Ave., in the Lancaster Heights complex, authorities said. Officers responding to the scene found two unresponsive adult males just inside the doorway who’d been struck and killed by gunfire. Multiple weapons were also found.

No arrests had been made as of 11:15 p.m. Wednesday, said Normal Police Chief Rick Bleichner. But he said the public is not in additional danger.

“At this time, I’d say we believe we have everybody who was involved in this accounted for,” Bleichner said. “At this time, we don’t believe there’s anybody out running at large around the community. We don’t believe there’s any additional danger to anybody in the community.”

“This, as out of the ordinary as it is for the Town of Normal, this was an incident where these individuals targeted each other. And it was something related to and confined to this apartment,” he added.

The two dead men have not yet been publicly identified. Bleichner said a third person was involved too. The McLean County coroner’s office was on scene late Wednesday.

Multiple guns were found at the scene, and several shots were fired, Bleichner said.

“Some of the circumstances that surround it, and the evidence we’ve seen to this point, would lead me to believe that potentially drugs were involved,” he said.

Illinois State University Police Department was monitoring the situation. The apartment complex is located just north of College Avenue, west of Towanda Avenue.

"It is not an area typically occupied by ISU students," ISU Police said on its Facebook page. “At this time we do not believe there is an immediate threat to the ISU campus.”
