A Colfax Republican plans to run for the McLean County Board in 2018.

Gerald Thompson announced his candidacy Friday for District 1, which includes a large geographic chunk of northeastern McLean County. Thompson is a corn and soybean farmer who’s served on the McLean County Farm Bureau and Illinois Farm Bureau board of directors.

“As a farmer, I can offer a perspective that is under-represented on the county board,” Thompson said in a statement Friday. “Agriculture is one of the largest economic drivers in our county, but we do not currently have a full-time farmer on the county board.”

Thompson is a Republican precinct committeeman and former Arrowsmith Village Board member.

“I believe I have strong leadership experience to bring to the county board and I would consider it n honor to represent the people of McLean County,” Thompson said. “My focus will be on creating and maintaining an environment in our county where people want to live, work and operate businesses. Fiscal responsibility, accountability to my constituents and advocacy for the rural areas of our county will be my top priorities.”

District 1 Republican Don Cavallini’s four-year term ends in 2018. Cavallini told GLT that he does not intend to seek re-election. (Thompson previously ran against Cavallini as a write-in candidate.)

District 1 is also represented by Republican Catherine Metsker, whose term runs until 2020.
