On Thin Ice: Climate Researcher Notes Arctic Effects From Global Warming Trend

Illinois State University

One of the world's leading authorities on climate change says we're in a mess.

Jon Smol founded the Paleo Ecological Environmental Assessment and Research Lab, or PEARL at Queens University in Ontario. His research shows arctic ponds are drying up faster than predicted because of warmer temperatures and the increased evaporation those temperatures bring.

Smol said that leads to higher salinity and disappearing wetlands, which have implications for the arctic.
