Supreme Court Could Determine Labor's Future

An Illinois State University labor expert says a case before the US Supreme Court over union dues paid by non-union employees would not directly affect private sector unions. The case is being pursued by some California teachers who say they shouldn't be force to pony up dues when the disagree with the union. ISU's Victor Devinatz says it has nothing to do with union politics. "These fair share fees have gone to support the union's for the collective bargaining services that these non-members recieve, not for specific political campaigns or candidates that the unions are supporting." Devinatz says the practice of "fair share" dues means employees have to pay the fees, even if they don't belong to the union because they benefit from it. If the Supreme Court decides the fees can not be mandatory, some 5-Million non-union public sector employees would be affected.
