Less than a week after losing her election for McLean County clerk, Nikita Richards will join Gov.-elect JB Pritzker's transition team.
Richards was named Monday to a committee that will advise Pritzker on veterans issues. Richards, a Democrat from Bloomington, will be one of 19 members on the Serving Illinois’ Heroes Committee. It's chaired by U.S. Sen. Tammy Duckworth, D-Ill., a veteran herself and former assistant secretary of the Department of Veterans Affairs.
“There is no better way to honor the men and women who served our country than to get ready to serve them on day one of our administration,” Lt. Gov.-elect Juliana Stratton said in a statement. “JB and I will spend every day making sure our veterans can afford higher education when they return home, build economic opportunity, and have access to safe, affordable housing and quality health care. Our veterans bravely served our country and it’s time Illinois had their backs.”
Richards lost in a hotly contested race for McLean County clerk against incumbent Republican Kathy Michael. Richards is a Navy veteran who works for the City of Bloomington.
