A puppy tested positive for the parvovirus Thursday, and cats may have been exposed to ringworm.

The Humane Society of Central Illinois will be closed until next Wednesday as the shelter tries to stop viruses from infecting more animals.

The Humane Society of Central Illinois (HSCI) said in a Facebook post Thursday night that will be closed to all visitors, volunteers, and potential adopters. A puppy tested positive for the parvovirus Thursday, and cats may have been exposed to ringworm, HSCI said in a statement.

Parvo is a highly contagious virus. Without previous vaccinations against it, when a puppy is exposed, it can cause a gastrointestinal illness. Without immediate professional treatment, it is potentially deadly.

"The staff is tackling the problem proactively and aggressively deep-cleaning the entire shelter," HSCI said. "Pets are being monitored for symptoms."

To help with cleanup, HSCI is seeking donations of bleach, paper towels, laundry detergent, and antibacterial dish shop. They're also accepting monetary donations.

The nonprofit HSCI is supported by nominal pet adoption fees, plus donations from individuals, foundations, and companies. It helps more than 2,200 animals annually. The vast majority of animals at HSCI have been relinquished by their owner.
